Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is considered to be one of the most gratifying plastic
surgeries to receive, because the patient often will find their
entire facial aesthetic modified.
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to alter the shape
of an individual's nose, although some patients undergo rhinoplasty
because of breathing problems associated to the internal nasal
structures. There are various motivations for a rhinoplasty, however
some common desires for rhinoplasty include a nose appearing too
large for the rest of the face, a bump on the nasal bridge that is
apparent when viewed in a profile, a wide nose, a drooping or
plunging nasal tip, a thickened nasal tip, excessively flared
nostrils, or an off center or crooked nose.
Nose reshaping procedures, or rhinoplasty, is a permanent procedure
that can be considered by anyone who is dissatisfied with the shape
or size of their nose. During the initial consultation with the
plastic surgeon, the rhinoplasty candidate should have a very clear
idea of how they wish to have their nose appear after the
rhinoplasty. The plastic surgeon will be able to tell you what is
possible with the rhinoplasty. The plastic surgeon will conduct a
routine examination of your internal nasal structure and study the
skin quality and size and shape of your nose in comparison to the
rest of your face in order to best assess how to achieve the goals
of the patient. In some instances a plastic surgeon may recommend
other procedures to go along with the nose reshaping to better
balance out your face, like chin surgery, that can be performed at
the same time as the nose reshaping.
Usually the incisions for a nose reshaping will be made inside the
nose where it will not be visible. When the base of the nose is
narrowed or the nostrils are reduced, small wedges of skin at the
base of the nostrils will be removed. The incisions are hidden in
the natural crease where the nostril joins the cheek.
Initially, there will be bruising around the eyes and cheeks during
the first three days following the surgery but will subside within a
week. Make-up can be used a couple days after surgery to help
conceal the discoloration. Swelling will last a little bit longer,
for several weeks and as long as many months for residual swelling.
Packing will be removed in 3-7 days or will dissolve on its own, if
it was used during the surgery. Patients should allow as much as one
year for the final results of the rhinoplasty to set in.
